Essay
The Harrison Honors Program is looking for students whose personal qualities include strong intellectual curiosity and the willingness to take risks. We are looking for students who are just as interested in the route they take to their academic goals as the goals themselves. To help us get a sense of whether you are a good candidate for the Program, please write an essay that addresses the following.
Think of two incidents or situations in your life, one from your academic life and one from your personal life, in which your curiosity led you to try something you were not sure would succeed but that fascinated you anyway. Then, write an essay with three parts. Use the first part to tell your reader about your personality. Then, remembering that your readers don’t know you, in the next two parts describe each situation or incident in detail and explain how each is a good example of your curiosity and willingness to take risks. Don’t worry if the risk you took ended in disappointment or failure—tell us what you learned from it. When you are done with your stories, don’t worry about writing a conclusion. The Harrison Honors Committee will draw our own conclusions from what you have told us.
How long should this essay be? Make it as long as it needs to be to show (not tell!) us why you belong in the community of Harrison Scholars at Birmingham-Southern.
